Basic Monologue Criteria:

  • Who is the Character: _________
  • Where is the Character: ________
  • Who is the character speaking to? ____________
  • What does the character want? ____________
  • What is the STORY ARC in the monologue? ________ (Initially, Then, Finally)
  • Keep it to 2-3 minutes

PROMPTS:

  1. Choose a famous person – past or present – and write an inner monologue for them. What’s going on in their head?
  2. The first line of the monologue is: “I’m not going with you.”
  3. The character in the monologue is leaving town forever and has to tell his/her best friend or a family member.
  4. A boy/girl is tired of being yelled at by his/her  mother/father for not being the right kind of son/daughter.
  5. A character has to apologize for something. By the end of the monologue the character is no longer sorry.
  6. A girl/boy is fed up with trying to be liked by the popular girls/boys. She/he tells them exactly what he/she thinks of them and who she/he really wants to be
  7. The character is from a broken, dysfunctional home and longs for normalcy.
  8. Confront a friend or loved one about missing money.
  9. A brother confronts his sister (or vice versa) about her boyfriend/girlfriend.
  10. A character explains why you can’t trust anyone.
  11. A character describes their condition (anxiety, depression, a disease, an addiction).
  12. A couple is in a broken down car by the side of the road and they just broke up. Choose one of them.  What does one say? What does one not say?
  13. Character addresses a rumour.
  14. Character explains why they were arrested to their family.
  15. Character explains why they are afraid of water.
  16. Character makes a confession.
  17. Character is embarrassed.
  18. Character unintentionally reveals a secret.
  19. Character has an opportunity to change their life but is afraid of the change.
  20. Character is from a famous painting.
  21. Character is from a song.
  22. Character has to say goodbye to a loved one (death? moving? leaving home?)
  23. First line – “I don’t want you to save me!”
  24. Last line – “I’m not interested.”
  25. A narrated memory.
